The SARProZ Story
How a research tool built for observation became a platform for discovery, engineering insight, and a growing international InSAR community.
From a University Visit to a Network of Users
The story of SARProZ is not the story of a product designed in a boardroom and pushed into the market. It is the story of a tool built by people who were trying to see more clearly. Its strength has always come from curiosity, careful observation, and the willingness to let satellite data reveal behavior that standard workflows can miss.
One important new chapter began in 2022, when our Alfredo Rocca, PhD, visited a university in Northern Italy. The university wanted to bring InSAR processing capability in-house, and the EO59 SARProZ tool stood out because it was flexible, teachable, and powerful enough for specialized research questions. What started as training quickly became something more: a collaboration in which students and researchers began using the software not only to process data, but to ask better questions of it.
When Users Become Investigators
At a University in Northern Italy, researchers were studying a bridge over the Po River. With guidance from EO59’s Alfredo, they improved their processing approach and began exploring the behavior of the structure in greater detail. Rather than stopping at a deformation map, they investigated the different physical causes behind the signal, separating effects such as thermal expansion from longer-term settlement.
That is where SARProZ becomes different from a simple processing environment. It gives capable users room to experiment. It allows a researcher to test assumptions, isolate behaviors, and move from “there is movement here” toward “this is what the structure is doing, and this may be why.” The result is not just a dataset. It is a form of interpretation.
Built for the Whole Cookie and the Individual Crumb
SARProZ can operate across large areas, but its particular value often appears when the question becomes small, specific, and engineering-driven. Many InSAR tools are optimized for regional monitoring and broad-area products. SARProZ can support those workflows, but it can also focus tightly on a single bridge, dam, pier, slope, building, or small cluster of pixels. That scalability is the super power.
Daniele Perissin has described this as the ability to study both the whole cookie and the individual crumb. For researchers and technical agencies, that matters. Some questions require scale. Others require attention to a subtle signal hidden inside a single asset. SARProZ was created for both.
A Philosophy of Observation
The philosophy behind SARProZ comes from a technical frustration that became a design principle. During Daniele’s doctoral work, he was searching for an extremely small signal in satellite radar data. For years, the signal remained elusive. Eventually, he discovered that part of the problem was not the signal itself, but an approximation introduced earlier in the processing chain. The data had been simplified before he had the chance to observe it fully.
That experience shaped the software. SARProZ was not built to force reality into a predefined model. It was built to preserve the user’s ability to observe, test, and interpret. For advanced users, this is more than a technical preference. It is the difference between accepting a standard output and uncovering behavior that may otherwise remain hidden.
Why It Matters for Researchers and Agencies
For researchers, SARProZ provides a flexible environment for moving from data processing to scientific insight. For space agencies and public institutions, it offers a way to support users who need both operational capability and analytical depth. For engineering research teams, it enables investigation at the level where decisions are actually made: the asset, the mechanism, the time series, and the physical behavior behind the signal.
· Process multi-temporal SAR datasets and support Persistent Scatterer InSAR workflows.
· Analyze phase, coherence, displacement, and time-series behavior over long observation periods.
· Work across sensors and scales, from regional monitoring to focused structural investigation.
· Support research workflows where interpretation, experimentation, and method development matter.
· Bridge the gap between scientific exploration and practical engineering decision support.
More Than Software
EO59’s various University collaborations led to publications, new technical methods, continued partnerships, and a wider network of users. New students joined. More difficult bridge studies followed. Techniques were developed to compensate for large thermal movements that would otherwise distort interpretation. The software became a catalyst for people who wanted to understand the world through radar data.
That may be the real SARProZ story. The platform is valuable because it processes SAR data. But its deeper value is that it gives skilled users the freedom to observe more carefully, test more intelligently, and discover patterns that standard approaches may overlook.
For Would-Be SARProZ Users
If your work requires more than a standard deformation product—if you need to investigate mechanisms, challenge assumptions, compare behaviors, or understand a specific structure in detail—SARProZ was built for that kind of work. EO59 supports SARProZ users with licensing, training, guidance, and practical experience applying InSAR to infrastructure, geohazards, and research problems around the world.

An important thing to keep in mind is that SARProZ is built for individuals and teams that can dedicate significant time to learning, studying, and growing in their SAR capability. It is not a replacement for professionally provided InSAR analysis from a trust source such as EO59.
